Build a Simple Site

At this point, I assume you have a domain name and a web host selected. If not, refer back to the earlier article, Start a Web Site.

For this "simple site" example, I'll use JustHost.com and their "Site Builder" application. You might find it useful to take advantage of the 250 videos in their library of tutorials that will explain details of the steps to build a site. Their searchable knowledge base is helpful too.

To illustrate building a site, I'll use a subdomain of WilcoxEstates, which is a domain I have already. For want of anything better, I'll simply call the subdomain "mytempsite" and it can be accessed at http://mytempsite.wilcoxestates.com/.

How did I build it?

1. Like most hosting companies, JustHost.com provides a "Control Panel," or "CP" so we can do most site administration tasks without getting into esoteric details. When we log in, that becomes our administrative home page.

2. In the "Domains" section, I selected "Subdomains" and created "mytempsite."

3. In the "Files" section, I selected "FTP Accounts" and created an FTP user.

4. Finally, in the "Choice of Site Builders" section, there are several icons offering different options to build a new site. We'll select the first one called "Site Builder."

5. View the JustHost video showing an animated overview of the next steps. In "Site Builder Video Tutorials," select the first video entitled "How to create your website."

6. Fill in the requested information so the site-builder program can access your new site:

  • Domain name: mytempsite.wilcoxestates.com
  • FTP Username: ******
  • FTP Password: ******

7. The program goes to the second step and presents a message that looks like this:

JustHost Site Builder message.

8. At this point, because the site's already been created, I would select the first option to edit the site. Refer to the Site Builder Video Tutorials for adding pages, images, links, polls, etc.
